The long time debate of choosing carpet or hardwood flooring for the bedroom is always a challenge. There are three sides to this decision. One is that you need to consider the resale and overall value of your home, and how you want to invest in that. Second, is that you need to consider the aesthetics of your home and how you want the design to flow. Third, you need to consider how you will enjoy the space and how you live your everyday life. Our flooring experts at Floor Coverings International of Austin has put together a few recommendations and suggestions to help you determine which choice is right for you.

Hardwood Flooring

Value

If you’re considering selling your home, or are just looking to boost the value of your home, one of the more common ways for homeowners to do this is by making flooring adjustments and changes. It almost always increases the value of the home. In most cases, installing new hardwood floors in a bedroom will add the most value to your home. This can be a bit of a laborious process and a little more expensive than carpeting, unless you are refinishing existing hardwood. It also depends on the potential buyer if this is valuable to them, as hardwood floors can be a little colder and harder when compared to carpeting.

Aesthetics

While, again, not as soft as carpet, hardwood flooring can still be a warm, welcoming addition to a bedroom. It’s durable, has a beautiful natural look, and can be versatile by adding rugs or other features on the floor.

Your Personal Enjoyment

If you find yourself lounging on the floor frequently like some homeowners, hardwood flooring may not be the best choice for your personal needs and desires. Additionally, if you have pets, you may want to consider how easy an accident is to clean up. Hardwood flooring is a little easier to deep clean than carpeting, however hardwood floors require sealants and finishes if you want to protect the floor from scratches from your furry friends.

Carpet

Value

By upgrading and updating your bedroom flooring with carpeting, you can certainly add value to your home especially if the flooring in your bedroom now is outdated, stained, and old. Depending on the potential buyer, they may prefer carpeting in their bedrooms, as it’s more comfortable and less expensive than hardwood flooring. While carpeting may not have the amount of return and value as hardwood flooring, it’s still a great way to update your bedroom and add value to your home.

Aesthetics

Carpet is soft, and comfortable. Many people prefer this especially in bedrooms, as it’s warmer, quieter, and softer than hardwood floors. While hardwood flooring may be more aesthetically pleasing than some carpeting choices that is not the case for all carpeting choices.

Your Personal Enjoyment

Don’t forget to consider how you use the room. If you have children who like to use your bedroom as a play area, carpeting might be a better choice comfort wise. If you have pets who create lots of messes and accidents, carpeting might be a little bit challenging to clean, not impossible, but a little more challenging than hardwood. Carpeting is also slightly safer than hardwoods as a fall might not hurt as badly on the soft carpet rather than the hard floor.
