If it’s time for new tile in your home, you have a number of decisions ahead of you. After you’ve chosen your tile, it’s time to think about grout color. At Floor Coverings International in Austin, we know that the number of decisions there are to make can feel overwhelming. Often people are unsure if they should choose light or dark grout with their tile. Check out our quick guide to the pros and cons of each option to help you make the right choice for your home.

Light

A light grout can help to lighten up a space and make it seem larger. The main problem with it, as you might expect, is that light grout more easily shows dirt and grime accumulation over time. You will have to be diligent about keeping your grout clean if you decide to go with a light color.

Dark

On the other end of the spectrum, dark grout can more easily conceal the dirt on its surface. One downside is that fading is much more noticeable on dark grout. Be careful not to use cleaners that are too harsh. No matter what you do, the color will fade a bit eventually, so it’s good to be prepared for this.

How to Choose

Our experts at Floor Coverings International in Austin recommend taking grout samples home along with your tile samples and laying them side-by-side in the space you will be re-flooring. Try to see what they look like in different light, especially if the room in question has a large window.

Decide Not to Decide

If you try these out and decide you don’t love either of them, you can always go with a neutral tone that’s in between light and dark. You will have a little bit of the issues that come along with both styles, but also most of the benefits!
